Teeth Cleaning NYC

Professional dental cleanings on the UWS

Dental cleanings are the beating heart of what we do at Central Park West Dentistry. We believe that your oral health and overall health are closely connected, which is why we take preventive care so seriously. We’re a full-service dental practice, with experienced hygienists, general dentists, and specialists working together to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What happens during a professional teeth cleaning?

Even if you’re great about brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar in places that are difficult to clean at home. That’s where your hygienist comes in.

During your cleaning, your hygienist uses specialized instruments like a cavitron to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, including around the gumline. They’ll also polish your teeth to remove surface stains and check for signs of gum inflammation.

At CPW Dentistry, your cleaning is part of a complete dental wellness visit. You’ll also see one of our dentists for an examination, and we’ll take X-rays when needed.

Your hygienist is also a great person to ask about your home care routine. Wondering if you’re flossing correctly or whether that expensive electric toothbrush is actually worth it? Ask away!

A Few Things That Make CPW Different

We’ve been caring for New Yorkers for more than 25 years, and we’ve learned a thing or two about making dental visits easier. Here’s what you can expect.

  • Open Seven Days a Week

Mornings, evenings, and weekends. Finding time for a dental cleaning shouldn’t require taking a day off work. Our team is here when it’s convenient for you, and we make it easier to fit dental care into your busy schedule.

  • Longer First Visits

We set aside a full 90 minutes for your first wellness visit, giving your hygienist and dentist time to get to know you, thoroughly evaluate your oral health, and answer all your questions.

  • Prevention Comes First

We’d rather help you prevent a cavity than treat one! In addition to regular cleanings, we offer several preventive options like dental sealants, fluoride treatments, seal & protect, and Curodont.

  • Insurance & Membership

We participate with several major PPO dental insurance plans. For patients without insurance, or those who prefer a different approach, our Care+ Membership offers another way to access preventive dental care.

  • Locally Owned

We’ve been part of the Upper West Side community for over two decades! We’re still locally owned, combining the personal attention of a neighborhood practice with the conveniences of a larger dental team.

  • A Little Extra Comfort

From coffee while you wait to topical numbing gel, lip balm, and TVs in our treatment rooms, we’ve thought about the little things that can make your visit more comfortable. You’ll go home with a CPW dental wellness goodie bag.

What’s the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

First thing’s first: all our cleanings are thorough.

A routine wellness cleaning is generally recommended for people with healthy gums. Your hygienist removes plaque and tartar from your teeth, including areas that are difficult to reach with brushing and flossing at home.

If you have periodontal (gum) disease, you may need scaling and root planing, sometimes called a deep cleaning or gum therapy. This treatment removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and helps manage the infection and inflammation associated with gum disease.

If you’ve previously been treated for periodontal disease, your dentist may recommend periodontal maintenance (aka gum care) visits instead of regular preventive cleanings.

We’ll check your gum health, including measuring the small spaces between your teeth and gums, before recommending the type of cleaning that’s right for you.

Frequently asked questions about dental cleanings

  • Your visit begins with a professional cleaning by one of our dental hygienists, who uses specialized instruments, including a Cavitron, to remove plaque and tartar buildup.

We’ll also measure the pockets around your teeth to check for signs of gum disease. One of our dentists will examine your teeth, review any necessary X-rays, and check for other oral health concerns.

Your visit may also include an oral cancer screening, which we recommend annually, and an optional fluoride treatment. Before you leave, your hygienist can offer practical tips for keeping your teeth and gums healthy at home.

  • For many people, every six months is a good starting point. But there’s no single schedule that’s right for everyone! Your dentist and hygienist may recommend more frequent visits if you have gum disease, tend to develop cavities, or have other oral health concerns. We’ll recommend a schedule based on what we see during your appointment.

  • If you’re a new patient without dental insurance, our $450 New Patient Wellness Special includes a comprehensive exam, routine teeth cleaning, full-mouth X-rays, oral cancer screening, and optional fluoride treatment. Deep cleanings and other periodontal treatments are not included.

We also offer Care+ Membership plans starting at $64 per month, which include routine preventive visits and other benefits. Membership requires a 12-month commitment.

Not sure which option makes sense for you? Give us a call at (212) 579-8885. We’re happy to help you compare.

  • We reserve a full 90 minutes for your first dental wellness visit. This gives your hygienist and dentist plenty of time to get to know you, evaluate your oral health, and complete your cleaning and examination without rushing.

Returning patients are typically scheduled for one-hour wellness visits.

  • At CPW Dentistry, routine teeth cleanings are part of a comprehensive dental wellness visit that includes an examination with one of our dentists and x-rays. This allows us to check your teeth and gums, identify any developing problems, and make sure you’re receiving the type of cleaning that’s appropriate for your oral health. You can learn more about why we do this here.

  • Absolutely! We regularly welcome patients who haven’t seen a dentist in several years, or even decades.

Your first appointment will help us evaluate your teeth and gums and determine whether a routine cleaning or periodontal treatment is appropriate. There’s no need to do anything special to prepare, and certainly nothing to apologize for.

If you’re concerned about sensitivity, tell your hygienist! We have topical numbing gel available to help make your cleaning more comfortable. And yes, we even have lip balm to keep your lips from drying out.
