What is gum recession?
Gum recession (also called gingival recession) is the exposure of a tooth’s root due to a receding gum line. This can lead to gaps forming between the teeth and gum line, causing bacteria to build up. Gum recession is a common dental problem that many people don’t even know they have because it occurs gradually. It can occur from early teens to elderly people.
What are the symptoms of recession?
Initial signs of gum recession are usually tooth sensitivity to hot or cold, or your tooth may appear longer due to the exposed root.
What causes Gum Recession?
There are a number of contributing factors that lead to recession. They can be bruxism habits, like grinding and clenching your teeth, periodontal disease which can lead to bone loss, aggressive brushing techniques, a tobacco habit, lip or tongue piercings.
How can I prevent recession?
Using a soft bristled toothbrush when brushing, and proper brushing technique, which can be discussed with your hygienist at your next dental wellness visit. Wearing a nightguard if you grind and clench. Quitting smoking.
