Have you had a root canal or a dental implant? If so, you might have noticed we take extra X-rays of these teeth during your visits. Let’s talk about why these specific X-rays are necessary. First things first, there are two main types of dental X-rays: 1) PAs (Periapical) vertical images, which show the whole tooth from the top of the crown all the way to 3mm beyond the end of the root, and 2) BWs (Bitewings), which are horizontal images that show both upper and lower teeth in one area from the top of the tooth to the level of the supporting bone.
Typical check-up x-rays don’t include focused PAs of teeth that might have this specialty treatment, but it’s important that we take them. Why? For teeth treated with a root canal, monitoring healing is crucial. We look for signs of decreasing infection scars or any new infection indicators. With implants, we need to regularly check to make sure the implant is securely in place and that the gum around it is healthy.
Sometimes, insurance will help with the cost of these x-rays. We try to utilize your insurance effectively by alternating standard check-up X-rays with these specialized images. This approach makes the best use of your insurance and keeps the frequency of X-rays consistent. If insurance doesn’t cover these, the cost is typically around $50 per X-ray. These X-rays help us ensure the treatment was successful and remains effective. Taking them is an investment in ensuring the longevity and health of your dental work.
